Yes, the cluster stays up. However, you can not have any new nodes join the cluster, as they need to get their configuration from ndb_mgmd. This is why some people have two managment nodes.

In reality, it's pretty easy to hot-swap in another machine as a mgm node in the case of the magic smoke[1] of the mgm node escaping.


[1] As you're probably aware, computers rely on magic smoke to work. When the magic smoke escapes, it no longer works.
