Firstly, 3 data nodes is not recommended. The number of data nodes must be a multiple of NoOfReplicas, and NoOfReplicas = 2 is the recommended number.

Localhost connection to the database is one less network hop to contend with. Network latency is a common culprit for ndbd performance. I've been told that under the single threaded ndbd, the ratio of SQL to NDBD nodes which provides the best of concurrency and total throughput was 8:1. In this situation I'd say probably the higher number of SQL nodes you have the better performance you will see.
