Sam, your best option is to ask the phpMyAdmin devs if there's some reason why a particular table type would cause problems in this regard. If it's actually reading filesizes, then there'd likely be a problem, because the storage mechanism is different for NDB. But (as Stewart points out), SELECT COUNT(*) works just the same on Cluster as it does with any other storage engine.
