on 32bit with more than a couple of gigs of ram, you'll have to run more than one ndbd process to take advantage of all that memory (e.g. a box with 8GB may have 4 2GB ndbd nodes running).

On 64bit, you can just have a 7 or 8GB ndbd node.

So, for large amounts of memory, 64bit is recommended. It should be noted that Opeterons with linux 2.6 kernels seem to perform rather well.
