"not viable" is harsh - it depends on your requirements and budget. Some people just need the features (and performance) that an in-memory database offers.

I'm working on (will distribute publically soon) a tool that will help you in working out your DataMemory requirements.

Otherwise, you can wait for 5.1 and disk data. That will make it easier for larger databases on a budget.
