The confusion probably stems from Intels' (arguably bad) idea to support large amounts of memory on the 32bit chips too. The caveat being that no single process could address it. Talk about ugly hack (or elegant, depending on your point of view). I've sent off feedback to our web team.
Did you take into account the NDB specialties in the documentation? Probably not all of them anyway :)
Check out my ndb_size.pl script on the cluster mailing list. It'll hit a mysql download at some point, but not yet :)
