re "too large / running out of": this is what we refer to as autotuning. Cluster has many static but configurable parameters. But if you start with a decent configuration usually you can avoid re-configuring all the time.
re "sharding": if you wan to collect stats from across multiple shards without using mysql cluster I guess you need to program this manually by fetching data from all instances and aggregating them.
