Changing the default /var/lib/mysql-cluster in ndbd

I'm trying to setup a new cluster with MySQL 5. Our systems are setup such that one department is responsible for the OS and we are responsible for the apps tree. We therefore do not have, and do not want to get, access to /var/lib for writing. I have searched long and hard for a way to get ndbd to start-up without trying to write a pid file to /var/lib/mysql-cluster but have had no luck in finding a method. Adding variables (including BaseDir, FileSystemPath, DataDir) to the my.cnf file on these systems has not worked. I also don't see a way to specify custom directories on the command line. Could someone please point me in the right direction? I can't imagine this would be hard-coded into the cluster binaries...

Thanks!
