There are many users who deploy MySQL Cluster (NDB) successfully on VMware, and many who co-locate multiple mysqlds on to a physical host. To ensure HA, it is important you do not co-locate multiple data nodes from the same node group on a physical host - this will bring the cluster as a whole down if the host dies.

You mention another option is InnoDB - I wanted to be sure you understood NDB is not just a clustering mechanism - it is its own storage engine in its own right which distributes and manages data in a different way from InnoDB. To get a better idea of ndb, it would be worth downloading the Evaluation Guide (registration needed):
