Answer to Q1:
Nodes are grouped in node groups. All nodes in a node group
contain the same data. So if one node in the node group fails
the remaining node still have all data both for online operation
and also for recovery.
The durability comes from a combination of
LCP (Local checkpoints), REDO logs and Global checkpoints (a sort
of group commit).
Backup is an additional recovery option that recovers from an old
point in time.
