Doesn't sounds reasonable to me either, please report a bug
and e.g. make a SHOW CREATE TABLE before the change and
the ALTER TABLE commit.
I am not aware of any reason why this would have any different
behaviour dependent on version. 7.5.4 is a bit old, so could be
some bug that already been fixed, but not anyone that I immediately
think of.
