I have also encountered this type of issue. Each server is a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4, has one ndbd process running, and there are 2 data node servers -- there is also one management server with ndb_mgmd.
Processor load does not seem to be high (10% or under) but load average is generally between 3-4. Without ndbd running, load remains below 0.5 without processor usage also remaining below 5%. In particular, I'm also seeing a high occurence of "iowait" CPU usage when ndbd seems to be using processor, and the load rises.
I'm trying to research the issue more, and I'll be sure to post here if I find anything.
