Each storage engine has its own quirks and though I have just started doing testing with mysqlcluster, I have come to realize that cluster is not something you just jump in and "upgrade" to. You need to test it, test it, and test it.
Right now I have a non-cluster setup of 1 master, and many slaves.
In testing the cluster, I'm converting one of the slaves to be a sql node to test any config, general, performance problems with the cluster. This is probably the best way to go in testing without distrubing your live traffic.
Use a slave as a cluster sql node, and issue alter table yourtable engine=ndbcluster for the most accessed tables and see how everything works out.
