How scalable is MySql?

I was wondering how scalable mysql was. That is to say, can performance be improved by adding more machines running mysql? I only came across a brief mentioning on this topic in the cluster description, where it said mysql cluster scaled almost linearly. Is there more description on mysql's scalability? Are there any benchmark results?
