Yes, SHOW SLAVE STATUS will return an empty set unless the master was recently the slave, in which case, hopefully the status will show that the threads are not running.

Which tables hold the "status" information. Which tables hold the results returned by SHOW SLAVE HOSTS?

I'll test how RESET SLAVE effetcs these statuses.
