replication across different time zones

i have a replication setup with a master in timezone Europe/Madrid and a slave in Europe/London. the slave server is started with TZ=Europe/Madrid to ensure both servers use the same times and dates. is this sufficient? there are occasions where the slave doesn't update (almost) immediately on a master update but instead can take some minutes, or 10's of minutes. i will shortly be doing further tests to determine if there's a pattern to the delays.
