how does replication affect your slave server load?

I'm running mysql 4.1.10 on my slave and 4.1.9 on my master. When replication is occurring my slave's server load really goes up. in the 2-4 range.

I've spent a lot of time on my table indexes so i really don't feel like that is the problem. actually, when i upgraded from mysql 3.28.56 to 4.1.10 i noticed the problem much more.

Has anybody else had any experience with this? Anybody have any tips or suggestions? I'm not ever sure where to go next. i just know that when nothing is replicating my load is around .25 and when there are instructions to be replicated it is always over 1.

Maybe it is just my queries....

Any thoughts on the topic would be greatly appreciated
