wrong hint on "Increase max_allowed_packet on master"?

I had a slave turned off for a while. When I enabled it again, I could see that the replication is interrupted, because:

Got fatal error 1236 from master when reading data from binary log: 'log event entry exceeded max_allowed_packet; Increase max_allowed_packet on master'

max_allowed_packet was 256 MB; I've set it to 1024 MB (maximum allowed for max_allowed_packet), restarted the master, but still, get the same error.

How do I recover from this situation? max_allowed_packet on both master and slave is at its maximum now, 1024 MB.
