Replication: Slave with all historical data - Master with only recent data

Hello!
We have a big database holding invoices.
Since its performance is getting always slower I thought we could install a second server and setup a master - slave replication where the master holds only the current data (last two-three year) whereas the slave the whole history. My idea is to first synchronize the two DBs, then delete the old data from the master and only at this point activate the replication. Yearly we will have to clean-up the master (delete the data of one year): for this event I thought to stop the replication, delete the data on the master and finally restart the replication.
Do you think replication is a good solution to this problem? Is there a way to perform these "cleaning" tasks on the master without having to restart the server in order to change its replication configuration?
Thanks a lot for your advices.
Patrick
