I came across this thread while looking for an answer to my own question, but maybe this can help us both...

The OP stated that the ultimate configuration would be four servers in ring replication. For that to work, don't you have to have log_slave_updates on each node to have all changes propagate around the ring? And, if that's the case, is it safe to have log_slave_updates on for dual master replication?

Out of curiosity, what mechanism indicates to a master that a logged event was originally generated by itself and therefore does not need action or logging?
