Statement/row questions

Hi,
We have a master database version 5.1.24
Our slaves are 5.1.31

The replication runs in mixed mode.

When we run delete command on the master (deleting 20,000+ rows), it is translated into rows deletion on the slaves which cause replication lag.

The original delete takes few seconds on the master.

Any idea why this happens?
Why this does not works as statement replication?

Thanks, Alon.
