My guess is that you did not enabled the binary log in the master, it is disabled by default.

A server can actually run as both a master and a slave.
I you want to stop the slave from the replication forever, you shuold do a "reset slave", otherwise it will continue to try to connect to the master setup previously since the information is stored elsewhere.
