The dual master (or ring replication) works. I have implemented it successfully. The trick is to not spread your database writes across the 2 machines. Just direct "write" traffic to one machine or the other. You can set up a secondary IP address bound to a NIC (multihomed) and use something like heartbeat from the Linux-HA project to fail over the IP address in case of a failure to the slave server.
