All works fine for me.

I have servers replicating in the same data centre on the same network and a disaster recovery server in a seperate data centre at the other end of the country.

Shouldn't use any more bandwidth theoretically regardless of where they are, only difference will be the time lag as the network response will be much slower. To work this out do a ping of the local network between the two servers and between the US and UK server. If it takes 100 times longer then the replication will be similarly slower. As long as it can keep up it should not be a problem.

I guess there may be some underlying extra bandwidth used but I don't know enough about tcp/ip to advise on that.

I'd suggest you write a cron job to check replication is working and warn you when its not.
