Update: There seems to have been trouble with the slave setup. We did the following now, which seems to have somehow resolved the issue (though there is still some trouble on that machine, see newer post "Seconds_Behind_Master strangely fluctuating"):

We reset the slave, CHANGEd MASTER TO the appropriate binlog values again, and started the slave again. seems to have worked. previously, when we copied the binlogs from another slave to this machine and renamed the binlog files appropriately, this leaded to the trouble mentioned above.
