Please help me

I am trying to do MySQL replication from once LinuxES to another LinuxEX which has MySQL-4.0.16

There is no password for root login for MySQL.

I have Primary (master) system which has IP addresses aliases eth0, eth1, eth2
I have Secondary (slave) system which has IP address aliases eth0, eth1, eth2

These eth0 are in same IP address range, same with eth1, and eth2 also.

When I started the replication as per the replication stemps from MySQL manual, its not happenning. slave is trying to connect the master with password option 'YES", but there is no password.

why its connecting like this? can any one help.
