Matsunobu's MHA does sound very solid.

http://www.skysql.com/blogs/chriscalender/mysql-high-availability-manager-mha-053-has-been-released-and-get-support-it-sky

It has one restriction... Only 2-tier setups, no relays. That is, it works only for a Master with slaves hanging immediately off the single Master.

The need for "dual master" is eliminated because any Slave can be promptly promoted to be the new master. Also, all other slaves are automatically repointed at the new master.
