Don't write to both Masters. That eliminates the auto-inc issue, etc.

Don't plan on trivially doing failover. It can be tricky, and if it is done wrong, you can make a big mess of the data.

Look at MHA and/or Percona XtraDB Cluster and/or Tungsten -- they are mature solutions to the dual-master failover situation.
