Replication Disconnected

Please help.
I have a database replicating with a master. When the slave connects to the master the binlog-dump will only work for 1 min. The slave then re-connects and again it only goes for 1 min.
The result of this is that the slave keeps on re-creating relay-log.000001 and that log stays small and then at the end of the log it rotates to the next log.
This means that when the replication involves a particular table there is not enogh time to get a complete transaction and the slave ends up in a loop.
I have no idea what can be causing this.
