There is no off peak time to do a backup. There are tons of changes 100% of the time. :(

Why is this a serious mistake? This is how one has to upgrade mysql in a replicated cluster. One needs to upgrade the slaves to the next major version, and then upgrade the masters. Rinse and Repeat.

I need to:
5.1 --> 5.5
then
5.5 --> 5.6
then
5.6 --> 5.7


Mysql does not support going directly from 5.1 --> 5.7 in a live replicated cluster.

If I was able to get complete downtime, I could so a full dump/restore, but since that would take about a full week, I dont have that luxury. FML
