OK. A team mate at work and I figured it out. The typo host name was in the SLAVE my.cnf, specifically the "report_host" was wrong. I hadn't though that the SLAVE could affect things like that. When I fixed the typo and restarted services on both machines and reran the replication setup everything worked OK.

I am a little surprised that the SLAVE didn't complain more about a bad report_host parameter but oh well.
