probleme with start slave

i want to replicate a database from a database( mysql 3.23) master to a database slave (mysql 5.0). i have configurate the slave my.cnf and the master my.cnf. But since a few day, the replication crashed and when i start slave; i received this following error :
" ERROR 1201 (HY000): Could not initialize master info structure; more error messages can be found in the MySQL error log"
i watch the mysql.err and mysql.log and i dont see any information about this error. i dont understand. if somebody can help me.
