Try a RESET SLAVE before the new master settings. If you have replication position settings in the my.cnf file, remove those and restart the server and try again.
If you have no error log file, investigate why - the server tries to write to standard error or the error log file every time it starts up and shuts down so you have to either have the file, have permissions problems preventing it from being created or have it going to the console.
