Thanks for your feedback, James. We've come to the same conclusion that we need to run a newer version.
We recently tried installing the latest 5.0.xx PPC binary tarball from mysql.com. It seems incompatible with our glibc libraries as it won't run, so we've isolated the database that hosts the data for the *** DEAD *** query to another (newer, but infinitely slower) server. We will contact Novell for this -- this is their Entreprise product, hence their problem. I simply wanted to confirm that our setup and hardware was sane before blaming the code, and that we hadn't missed anything obvious.
