MyISAM VS InnoDB table types

Dear professionals,

I have learnt that backup of mysql databases depend on the type of tables a MySQL database is using. For example, the mysqlhotcopy method can be performed on MyISAM but not on InnoDB.

So how can I determine the type of tables my database is using? And also, is it a default table value for each mysql database release? for example, what is the default table type in mysql 3.23, 4.1 and 5.1 repectively?

Thanks for your reply in advance!!!
