I totally agree with you Kathy. We do this for our big databases. Some of them have grown to the point where mysqldump is taking the server to its knees. So we now have it replicating to a slave and we just stop the slave when we need to do backups, and do a direct copy/compress of var folder. This way is our preferred method for bigger databases since restoring or copying to another server is just matter of copying the compressed folder over and unzipping it.
