Re: take incremental backup

binlog is useful for replicating to a "slave". I have not seen a clean procedure for using them as an "incremental backup". If you find such, let me know. Meanwhile, trust only full backups, and taken only in a sufficiently quiesced state:
* If using mysqldump: lock _all_ tables throughout the dump.
* If copying files: stop mysql, copy files, start mysql.
Anything less than that, risks inconsistencies.
