backup policy

Hi,

We are a web hosting company and using mysql 4.0.24 running 2000 databases on it,
we have backup issues.
I tried mysqldump, mysqlsnapshot but mysql server crashed meantime or sometime websites mysql database stops working and start displaying error i.e "Too many connections"

Can anybody assist me to have a backup options
