Sorry about the confusion I am referring to the actual binary logs on the slave.
You are correct that MEB requires the slaves bin logs to be turned on.
So all this said I'm thinking I'd have no choice , but to run ALL backups both binary and data from the slave.
Another question for anyone out there that happens to be reading this..
Have you used commvault and it's mysql agent ? If so can incremental backups be used for specific point in time recovery with transaction logs (binary logs) ??
