True, you do not "have to" change.
A Slave makes an excellent backup tool, whether it is InnoDB or MyISAM.
With Percona's Xtrabackup, you can take a live backup of InnoDB tables (but not MyISAM) with virtually no impact on the queries coming in.
Hence, that would be an argument for using InnoDB, then Xtrabackup instead of Replication for backup.
