You are asking several different questions...
* Recovering data from a dead drive -- there are services that will do that, for a non trivial price
* Having RAID-1 (or other flavors) would allow you to survive loss of one drive without losing any data.
* Having a backup (of os, data, whatever) would let you reload after replacing the drive.
* In MySQL Replication is one way to recover, without data loss, from a system failure.
