(i) obviously the documentation for mysqldump 5.1 can't assert compatibility with a later version

(ii) if someone read your question and has tried 5.1 mysqldump with 5.5, she probably would have answered; none did, so...

(iii) it's the dog that didn't bark: you've no evidence for such compatibility, so it's probably not wise to count on it.

Instead, why not ask your provider to complete their 5.5 installation, or find a batter provider?
