Diagnosed a local problem that triggered this failure. The file /var/lib/mysql/auto.cnf was missing. Unfortunately the mysqlbackup command fails with an incorrect & misleading error message when this happens. I know you can't test everything, but it sure would be helpful if the mysqlbackup would report accurately exactly which file cannot be opened. In this case it was /var/lib/mysqlauto.cnf, **not* /tmp/bkup/datadir/backup-auto.cnf
