Another alternative (although I'm not sure I'd do this) is to run the mysqldump on the remote machine and use the --host option to connect to the machine you want to dump from over the network. This means you have to have mysql installed on the remote machine, and have a stunnel or private network to pull the data over.

I haven't used that technique very often, but thought I'd throw it out there.
