Which is best, mysql --chroot option or /usr/sbin/chroot

My google search turns up some articles such as these:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?threadid=34338
http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1726

And I notice there seems to be a general lack of info about this topic beyond 2003.

Is this because the --chroot option takes care of chrooting mysql, so going through the work of creating a chroot environment is now unecessary? Or is creating a chrooted environment still necessary to ensure security?

Thanks

Rob C
