Start MySQL with --skip-name-resolve if you don't need to use hostnames in your priv tables.
I'd really like to prove this as a bug too. See the last part of

I see this issue off and on in the forums and elsewhere but everyone seems to bypass it with --skip-name-resolve and then it's not mentioned again. Not surprising since it seems to only effect production servers and no one really wants to use their production server to isolate a bug. But I for one cannot reproduce it using test servers.
