Can you elaborate what exactly are you trying to achieve ?

Do I read it correctly that you're trying to replace the "mysql_native_authentication" plugin with your own plugin ?

Dare I ask why ? :)

BTW, you should also look into the 5.6 code as well. There's a new default authentication plugin there (sha256) and some enhancements of the pluggable authentication framework to support it.
So your task may be easier achieved using 5.6.
