Security Hosting Plan

Hi all,
I heart about a security hosting plan, which contains an intermediate database in front of the firewall, and hide the hosted database behind the firewall. But I am really not sure how this works. Is the intermediate one a duplicate of hosted DB. How is the firewall protect hosted information? Would the intermediate DB stay in risk? Could someone help please. would really appreciate.
