Recommend you batch the INSERTs -- either by having multiple rows in a single INSERT statement, or by using csv file. Recommend batch size of 100 rows (a compromise between rows/sec and locking time).

Can you at least show the indexes and the datatypes for the fields in the indexes. You can change the field names to a,b,c,... to obfuscate.

Yes, UPDATE will block SELECT -- but only for milliseconds.
