PARTITIONing by day is an excellent way to carve up a table into manageable chunks.

No need for UNION; the table fetches one or more of the PARTITIONs, automagically.

Deleting the oldest 'day' is a ALTER TABLE REORGANIZE PARTITION DROP PARTITION.... To add a new day partition: ALTER TABLE REORGANIZE future INTO p20120512 VALUES LESS THAN TO_DAYS('2012-05-13'), future VALUES LESS THAN MAXVALUE;
